Honouring The Heroes Of All This – Polkadoodles DT Announcement

Hello Crafty People,

In the midst of all this uncertainty I have several pieces of good news which I will be able to let you know about over the coming weeks. But today I am very happy to announce that I have been asked to join the DT for Polkadoodles. I absolutely adore their style, having fallen in love with this Tulip Darling I made recently for another challenge.

I will have oodles of Polkadoodles inspiration coming your way over the coming weeks, and I am so excited to begin this journey with Nikky & her lovely team!

I hope this posts finds you & yours well. We are all just doing our very best to get through all of this as intact as possible. My way of doing that is using creating as a cathartic release for my fear & anxiety. I’ve decided to funnel that energy into the only way I could think of to help the global effort; it is very easy to feel that we are stuck at home, but the reality is we are SAFE at home and not everyone can be. So I am making as many thank you cards as I can to send out to Key Workers in my local area.

Challenge Accepted

The challenge this time round is to use the wonderful new Winnie Heroes collection along with some sort of interactive element; I opted for a full panel shaker card for maximum fun & sparkle!

At the time of writing this post, the fabulous Heroes collection is available as a FREE download, along with matching sentiments. Nikky has released this for anyone to download, with the suggestion that they are used to thank the people tirelessly working to keep us safe and healthy.

I wanted to use the 3 people included within the Heroes collection to make a larger group of healthcare workers, but I didn’t want it to be obvious that I had repeated the same images multiple times.

Once I had sized my 1st image I used that as a base for sizing the other 2 people, then copied & pasted each one. I kept some in their original orientation, but I flipped some of the others to create a different look which would hopefully be enough to fool the eye into thinking these were all completely different illustrations.

Now, I currently use Publisher for reworking my digital images, it isn’t perfect but for my level of competency it gets the job done!

I am working on getting to know my way around a more capable computer programme but I’m not ready to give tips on how to use that one yet!!

Creating A Rainbow

I borrowed a background technique I recently saw in an video by ERICA (if you haven’t checked her out before, you really should! She’s a great mix of humour & talent, and she’s inspired me many times.) She used Copics to colour a rainbow background, just working her way through each colour, allowing for a few shades and overlapping where each colour meets another.

I’d never thought of doing it before, but in will definitely be using it again in then future! It was SO quick!! Love it!

Shake It Off

I created the full panel shaker by scoring my acetate and folding it over the background piece, adhering it on the back. Once I had attached 3 sides I added my shaker bits l, then sealed the last edge.

I attached the shaker panel to a card base, then used a mix of very strong tape and liquid glues to secure my image & sentiment to the acetate. (Acetate can be a bit of a slippy customer, so I always like to ‘insure’ with 2x adhesives when trying to stick to it; I’d rather be a little extra than have a card fall apart between leaving me and arriving with its recipient!!

I’m so happy to begin my journey with Polkadoodles and I’m really looking forward to seeing what you all create for this challenge! I’ll be popping in & out of your blogs/Instagrams etc to see what you have been making and I hope you like my 1st project as a Designer with Polkadoodles!

Thank you for visiting my blog, if you’d like to see more of my artwork & how to’s and/or hear my thoughts on living with a chronic illness then please consider subscribing. T.
