Actually using some of my hoarded backgrounds…

Sometimes I feel like just breaking out whatever medium(s) I fancy and going a bit wild. Now these sessions are highly enjoyable but I don’t often get a finished product out of them right away.

Quite often I make something and I think it’s rubbish, or I just don’t like it, so I just don’t feel any inspiration to make it into anything. But I don’t like throwing away so I store it in the hope that it will spark inspiration in the future.

I take all of those pieces that I’ve made and store them in a plastic folder with a label that says ‘Not finished’, then when I run out of room in that folder I break out all of the pieces and try to make something out of them. (Anything that doesn’t make the cut this time goes back into the folder for future sessions.)

That’s what happened to this background I made a while back; I actually put a boomerang of this one up on my Instagram account when I made it. I thought that I loved it but then I just couldn’t decide what to do with it; so that’s how it ended up in my ‘Not Finished’ folder. Well, this week it had a second life!!

I die cut a feather out of white cardstock and used a mixture of grey pencil crayons and alcohol markers to add some shade and definition to it. I wanted to pick out the feathers that are embossed onto the background.

I added my sentiment, a silver ‘scripty happy’ from Lawn Fawn and a simple but bold ‘birthday’ to contrast that.

A few matting layers and a card base later and I think I’ve got a really nice little birthday card! It always feels so great when I manage to make something I really like out of something that I thought was too rubbish to use before.

(When I made the background piece I stamped & embossed a wreath of feathers using Gina K’s wreath template. Then I tapped some Nuvo Shimmer Powder over it and spritzed that with water to get this fun & random colour. One of my favourite techniques and so easy to do.)

Please be aware:

As part of my Design Team and Guest Design work I do often receive free products to use, but I only ever recommend products that I genuinely love.

Also, I know how incredibly lucky I am to have these opportunities, but you don’t always NEED the newest products or the ‘full set’.
So please don’t feel that you need everything.
I like to show a variety of brands and products; this way there will be something for everybody to enjoy.
