Coffee Lover’s Blog Hop – Graciellie Designs

This week I am so excited to be participating in the Coffee Lover’s Blog Hop as part of Gracie’s design team!

This is the Spring/Summer hop so the theme is pastel and straight away I knew I had to use the freebie from last week which is this incredible bubble tea image! (Now, I did check and although this is COFFEE Lover’s blog hop, any caffeinated hot drink is accepted, and bubble tea is indeed caffeinated!!)

I printed the bubble tea image onto my standard Neenah 80lb Solar White; then I coloured it using a mixture of Copic markers and Windsor & Newton Brushmarkers. I wanted to recreate one of those pastel pink drinks you see all over Instagram!

Colouring my image

These sort of drinks are always darker towards the bottom so that’s how I began to colour the drink itself, and once I had got to the top of the actual bubble bit I changed to some much lighter colours. The cup is obviously going to be round, so I made sure to keep that strong centre highlight.

I used some cool greys on the straw, again preserving that centre highlight that gives an object that depth of shadow at the edges that signals to our eyes that it is rounded.

I had never tried to colour a plastic cup or glass before so I was a little unsure how to proceed with the top portion of the cup. The best thing to do whenever you are colouring something is to have a reference image in front of you. This is my number 1 tip, because you need to be able to see where the shadows & highlights fall before you start trying to add them. I used a light blue to add some reflection into the plastic, as though it was reflecting the sky and I made sure to curve the reflections to follow the contour of the actual lid. I am actually quite happy with how it turned out!

Making a background

I used the new patchwork kite stencil from Altenew to blend some Hero Arts dye ink onto a Neenah 110lb card base. I started with Cornflower, which is a very pale blue, then I deepened the colour in the very bottom corner.

I fussy cut the bubble tea image and popped it up on some foam tape. For my sentiment I used one of the strips from my little sentiment pot on my desk, then added some black nuvo drops randomly.

I decided I wanted my image to be even more of a statement, so I covered it with Glossy Accents.

It’s a pretty simple card design but I think the Glossy Accents and Nuvo Drops tie at all in and elevate it that little bit more.

So that’s it, thank you so much for checking out my blog! We would love to see you hop along with us, and you will even have the chance to win some fabulous prizes, including a gift voucher from the wonderful Graciellie Designs!!

(I was feeling super inspired by all of Gracie’s coffee based designs, so I even made a second card to share tomorrow!)
