If you love colouring but aren’t quite ready to dive into blending techniques, then this project is perfect for you! Today, I’m sharing an easy colouring technique using Altenew’s fabulous pre-printed colouring panels and their alcohol markers. We’ll be focusing on colour blocking with alcohol markers to create an abstract look that’s full of bold, vibrant colours—perfect for a cheerful, floral-themed card.

This particular card was created for Altenew’s Instagram Reel Hop, with the theme “Grateful Blooms.” Be sure to check it out for a chance to win one of five $20 gift certificates! Now, let’s jump into the details of this joyful project.

Colour Blocking with Alcohol Markers: Step-by-Step

1. Colour blocking the letters: Start by colouring each section of the ‘JOY’ sentiment with four shades of your Altenew Alcohol Markers. Colour the entire section with the lightest shade first, let it dry, then move to the next darkest shade, covering about 3/4 of the area. Repeat with the medium and darkest shades, each time covering less of the section, until you’ve added all four colours.
2. Colour blocking the florals: Use the same method for the flowers and leaves, giving each petal or leaf a rich, vibrant look. Play around with different colour combos—blue, purple, yellow, or even a pop of teal—to create an abstract effect.
3. Colour the background: For a seamless design, colour the background around the word ‘JOY’ and the floral images using the lightest marker shade, but leave a strip of white space at the top of the panel for extra contrast.
4. Die-cut the panel: Once all the colouring is complete, die cut the entire panel with a rectangular die, making sure it’s slightly smaller than an A2 card to leave a lovely border.
5. Add some shimmer: Splatter the panel with gold watercolour to bring a bit of sparkle and shine. It’s perfect for creating an elegant, festive feel.
6. Finishing the sentiment: Stamp a sentiment strip that completes the word ‘JOY,’ trim it to size, and add it to the card with foam adhesive. Don’t forget to use a white gel pen to cover up any unwanted elements from the original panel.
7. Assemble the card: Finally, adhere the coloured panel onto a black A2-sized card base for a crisp, contrasting border that really makes those colours pop.
