Harry Potter Inspired Birthday Card – WOW! September 2019 Challenge Entry.

So, this week I had the challenge of creating a Harry Potter inspired card for my eldest daughter’s birthday.

Just like her Mother, she is a huge Harry Potter fan and I knew she would love to have a card inspired by the world that is so special to her.

I have seen some Harry Potter specific stamp sets and other craft items knocking around online, but after some research I realised that it would be very expensive to get hold of anything like that in the UK. So I challenged myself to make the card out of materials and design elements that I already owned, and I have to be honest, I am really happy with the results! (And so is my daughter!)

I saw the adorable Winter Owl coloured in online with Gryffindor house colours and I knew I wanted to have 4 owls that would be representing each of the four houses at Hogwarts.

I stamped them with alcohol marker friendly ink, My Favourite Things Hybrid Extreme Black, and coloured them in using my Promarkers. Then I fussy cut each of them out, and I coloured the edges of each one in black, so that there would be no white showing; it’s totally personal preference but I just think that this makes your images look much more professional.

I took a 6 inch square piece of Neenah Solar White card stock and I used stamps from two different sets to make a border around it, adding some sparkle to the stars with Lawn Fawn’s new glitter marker, then used the same promarkers I had used for each scarf to colour a patch on each quarter so that I could have a window for each Owl to sit in. (I got the inspiration for this design from this card made by the amazing Kristina Werner for Simon Says Stamp’s Stamptober celebration.)

I added some simple envelopes for these adorable owls to be delivering by just cutting small rectangles and adding details using a black fineliner. I made a small cut along the line where the wing touches the body on one of my owls so that I could slide an envelope in so that it appears to be holding onto one of the envelopes.

Once I had finished the outside, I stated work on the inside of the card; when thinking about possible designs I had thought of two different ideas which couldn’t ever work together, but I just couldn’t let either idea go! So, instead I decided to put my second idea inside the card as a pop up feature.

I used Distress Oxide pad to ink blend a dark sky that was being lit up by a singular source of light by blending each ink in a circular motion, using darker inks as I moved further away from the centre which would hold the light source.

I knew that I wanted that light source to be a Patronus charm in the form of a Stag, just as Harry Potter himself would create.

To create more of a scene I stamped out some layered trees from Altenew and just included 3 of them, to just add some slight interest and a hint at this being in the Forbidden Forest.

The pop up element is really easy to do, you just need to cut two small slits parallel to each other and crossing over the crease of the card, then you simply fold these in towards the inside of the card so that they lie flat when the card is closed but they stand up when it’s open. Simply adhere the image that you want to pop up onto the lower half of this strip; the part below the main fold of the card.

To add a little bit of a WOW! factor, pun intended, I coated the Stag in glow in the dark embossing powder; I absolutely LOVE how well this stuff glows and I am rather obsessed with it now.

I was really pleased with how this one turned out and happy knowing that my daughter would have something she could love and treasure for years to come.

This is also my entry to WOW! embossing powder’s September 2019 challenge.
