Today I’m joining the Altenew Gardens Around The World Video Hop, creating cards with an ombre metallic watercolour wash. Technique Basics
I created a few different cards, all using an emboss resist technique, before adding a watercolour wash over the top to create these gorgeous panels.
Stamping your images in clear embossing powder locks in the colour beneath it, so on this black paper you get solid, dark silhouettes.
When you add a medium, such as paint or ink, over the top, the embossing will resist it and the image is still visible.

Tips for getting an even transition of colour
- Be sure to evenly wet the paper before adding your colour and keep the edge of your paint wet. Don’t allow the edge to begin drying, or you will get some strange bleeding and inconsistencies in your finished piece.
- Keep your strokes all going in the same direction – here I wanted the ombre to be vertical, so I kept all of my strokes horizontal, working from top to bottom.
- Allow the sections of each colour to overlap, rather than stopping each colour at a fixed point before moving on to the next one.
Card 1 – Green Meadows
[These metallic watercolours look their best on darker cardstock, so I purchased this black watercolour paper by Legion.]
This ombre blend is: Sterling Silver, Prasiolite, Jade from top to bottom.
I trimmed the panel down to 3 3/4in x 5in, then I added it onto a dry embossed panel of Neenah 80lb. (TIP! Dry embossed means that I used a 3d embossing folder to give it some texture.)
I added a die cut Butterfly and sentiment strip both stamped in Obsidian Pigment Ink on Neenah 80lb.
Card 2 – Pink Sky At Night
I embossed the image in White Pearl embossing powder which creates a really fun contrast with the black paper and the watercolour paint.
This blend is: Rhodolite, Rose Quartz then Amethyst, top to bottom.
To make that gorgeous Butterfly, I stamped it with Green Onyx on the upper half and Tanzanite on the lower half. (To get an ombre stamp blend, use something to soften the edge of the ink you’ve applied to your stamp before stamping it down – a mini blending brush works brilliantly for this. Then do the same with your next colour, and don’t forget to allow the colours to overlap for a better blend.)
I die cut my Butterfly, and stamped a sentiment in Obsidian, before trimming it right down.
For the background, I used double sided adhesive to adhere two a2 panels of black cardstock then ran it through my die cutting machine with the Stacked Diamonds cover plate die. The die can’t cut through both sheets, but it leaves a deep impression. It’s a great way to stretch the use of your supplies!
Card 3 – Double Embossed
White embossing onto regular watercolour paper for this design, then I used Watercolour Brush Markers to add my ombre colour wash; Rouge, Warm Sunshine & Citrus Burst top to bottom.
Once it was fully dry, I ran the whole thing through to dry emboss it too; I love the texture it gives!
Then for some added interest, I used the Mega Stamp Frames die to add a white frame on Instant Dimension Tape.
Again, the sentiment is in Obsidian.
