Hey Crafty People!
Today we are hopping to continue raising attention to the racism which is deeply ingrained in our society, and to continue an open dialogue of how we are working to eradicate it.
Firstly, please head over to my IG post, and then you can hop your way through the rest of the wonderful participants. We are each creating a card with the theme in mind and talking about how we have worked to be better allies.
I created two projects for this hop; the first is a card with a Mandala that I coloured with a variety of skin tones and I have placed the word educate underneath it.
My second project is so very simple; Black Lives Matter.
I am not a perfect ally, but I am committed to learning & understanding how to be better. Here are some things that I have learned and ways I am working at being a better ally.
I am not going to talk about the ways racism affects POC, because I am not a POC. It’s that simple.
I have two children, and I ensure that we have regular discussions about how our white privilege gives us advantages and more importantly how to work actively against it.
I also talk to my family about what exactly white privilege is. It doesn’t mean that you have always had money, never suffered tragic events or have a perfectly perfect life.
White privilege means that the colour of your skin has not been an active factor in why those things happened, or in making those things worse.
White privilege means that you don’t have to think about racism unless something like this comes along to remind you. That doesn’t mean you are racist, or ‘don’t care’, it just means that it isn’t something that you have no choice but to face it every moment.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If you are white and a POC says they feel you have acted in a racially discriminative way, YOU. DON’T. GET. TO. TELL. THEM. THEY’RE. WRONG.
You don’t have their experiences.
You don’t get to decide what they should, or shouldn’t, feel or think.
It doesn’t have to be a solely negative interaction; Next time you are in that position, before you say 
“you’re wrong”
Try saying,”I’m sorry, and please can we talk about it, so that I can understand your point of view?”
Racism is nuanced and inbuilt in our very ways of life, so please consider that saying you have acted in a racially insensitive or discriminatory way is not the same as saying you are a white supremacist.
And we can all learn so much from walking in another’s shoes.
