This month I am delighted to have been asked to be the Guest Designer for Game #11 over at AAA Birthday. The theme for this month is Flowers and I just had to use the gorgeous Peonies from Gina K/Hero Arts – Friendship Blooms.
This stamp set is definitely my favourite release of last year. The floral images are so beautiful and it is large enough to fill an entire card; this is a 5x7inch size card.
I chose to heat emboss the image in Rich Gold embossing powder onto some watercolour paper.
I have just had some of the sparkle glitter alcohol markers from Spectrum Noir; despite being alcohol based they have a real brush nib and they are VERY juicy. I honestly think they behave more like aqua than alcohol. Because of this, I really wanted to explore how they would work on watercolour paper.
I chose 3 colours of the pens; a light, medium and dark shade. Using the medium shade as a highlight for the darker flowers and as the shadow for the lighter flowers.
They blended absolutely beautifully, and it was so easy because embossing the image creates little dams that help to keep colour where you want it.
I absolutely LOVE the shimmer you get from these pens. I don’t have any greens in the Spectrum Noir pens but I still wanted to carry that sparkle through into the leaves; I used some Nuvo Shimmer Powder Atlantic Burst, with a little darker green from an Arteza real brush pen.
I wanted to make it look like these flowers were painted straight onto black paper. I have seen a few tutorials recently using this little ‘hack’ to get that look; I used some black Gouache to fill in the paper all around the flowers. Once dry I cut the image out and mounted it onto some black cardstock.
I love the drama of it; that dark background really makes the flowers pop!
