Today is a quick little post to share this fun card I made for my nephew’s birthday! I love making action cards for kids and I’ve just had a new cake pop up die that I’ve been wanting to use.
I decided on a design with a baby dragon blowing fire onto the unlit candles, then inside the cake would pop up with the candles lit.
I coloured each of my images in with alcohol markers, (a mix of Copics & Promarkers,) and added some more depth & detail with pencil crayons. (This is a tip I picked up from the 30-Day Colouring Challenge Roadshow Online Course by Kathy Racoosin, which is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. *Not an advert, it just really helped me!) I made the background with Distress Oxide inks and my make-up blending brushes, then just secured everything together with a mixture of foam adhesive squares & liquid glue.
The pop up cake wasn’t exactly easy to do, it’s just very fiddly which isn’t easy when my hands don’t always do what I want them to! But I do like the effect and my nephew loved it, which is what matters most.
It was a lot of fun to make and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Hey Crafty People!
Please be aware:
As part of my Design Team and Guest Design work I do often receive free products to use, but I only ever recommend products that I genuinely love.
Also, I know how incredibly lucky I am to have these opportunities, but you don’t always NEED the newest products or the ‘full set’.
So please don’t feel that you need everything.
I like to show a variety of brands and products; this way there will be something for everybody to enjoy.

Hi Tasha, a super special card for Caleb’s birthday, I’m guessing he is turning four with the number of candles on the cake, love the DOI background, I haven’t tried anything but ink applicators for applying a layer like this. Thank you for the tips, have a wonderful week… Megan
Thanks so much!
Tbh I struggle with the foam applicators, I think I am a bit too heavy handed with them really. I find the blending brushes work much better for me, but granted it does take a bit longer to get this much saturation.
I just use some brushes I got off Amazon, they’re supposed to be for make up but they work brilliantly for ink blending!
Give me a shout if you try them, I’d love to see what you make!
T.
