LPOCF Challenge #128

Hello lovelies, and welcome to a new challenge over at Lil’ Patch of Crafty Friends

This time our sponsor is Fabrika Fantasy and they have got a shop packed full of digital stamps, colouring pages and tutorials. They also do custom illustration and they have some absolutely gorgeous images, so please do check them out.

This month’s image was chosen by one of the other members of the Design Team, it’s called Spring Butterfly. When you purchase it you will receive two files; black & white image and pre-coloured so these are perfect for paper crafters of any level or style.

This project was one of those ones where things just keep going wrong for you. I made a couple of small mistakes which came down to not planning what I wanted to do ahead, and then one VERY silly mistake. I’m keeping it in to show you that we ALL make mistakes, and to hopefully help you not make the same ones I did. (That does make this post a bit longer, so I’ve put some red separators around these bits so it’s easy to skip if you want.)

The difference between a professional and an amateur is that the professionals know how to cover their mistakes.

I don’t know where I heard this quote but it really stuck with me, and whenever I make those very silly mistakes I remind myself that EVERYONE DOES, and each mistake is an opportunity to learn how to cover it.

I coloured my image using a mix of Copics & Pro/Brushmarkers; I wanted her to feel like a Nature Fairy, so I used different shades of green for her outfit as though it was made from leaves. Then I chose yellows & purples for her wings to compliment the green.

Then I wanted her to be look as though she was flying across the front of the card with gold stars in her wake, I added Nuvo paste onto a sheet of Neenah Solar White using a stencil by Altenew and let it dry. It was then I realised that I wanted my background blue.

Adding Distress Oxide, which is a type of hybrid ink between pigment & dye based, over the dried stars meant that they had a cover of blue. But I could fix that! I have some micro brushes which I use for adding glue, so I took a very slightly damp one of those and ‘cleaned’ each star individually. I did accidentally get a bit of water onto my background but I could easily mask that by adding some more for a distressed look.

I added a gold stitched frame, and a sentiment embossed onto vellum which I wanted to stand out from the card as though arching behind my little fairy. I glued all of this onto a green card base and set it aside whilst I worked on my fairy some more.

This is where I made my incredibly silly mistake; I used a baby wipe to clean the ink off my glass mat and instead of tossing that wipe into the bin immediately, I put it to the other side on my desk as I carried on working. A couple of minutes later I realised with horror that I had put the wipe on top of my card base. It was sitting on the corner and the moisture was spreading across my card like one of those litmus tests you did back in school. Please learn from my lazy mistake: put stuff in the bin right away!!

I dried it as much as I could using my dual speed heat gun on the lowest setting and set it aside to dry completely. Once it had, I added some more oxide ink over the corner of the panel and although that didn’t cover it completely, I think I managed to save it which seemed impossible earlier. It kind of blends in with the distressed nature I already had going with this card.

I added some gold gel pen highlights to my fairy’s outfit, then popped her up on foam squares at the edge of my card, added gold gems and that’s this card done.

I can’t wait to see what you all create for this challenge, and make sure you drop by Fabrika Fantasy! If you do, don’t forget to tell them I sent you & tag me into your creations over on Instagram.

Please be aware:

As part of my Design Team and Guest Design work I do often receive free products to use, but I only ever recommend products that I genuinely love.

Also, I know how incredibly lucky I am to have these opportunities, but you don’t always NEED the newest products or the ‘full set’.
So please don’t feel that you need everything.
I like to show a variety of brands and products; this way there will be something for everybody to enjoy.
