Magical Scene Building | TLPT and Trinity Stamps Hop

Today I’m taking part in a super fun Instagram hop to celebrate The Little Paper Tree & Trinity Stamps!

For my project, I made a scene card, using lots of images from the Magical Wizards Stamps & dies.

I stamped lots of images using Tuxedo Memento Black ink onto Neenah 80lb cardstock, then set them aside to fully dry before I coloured them with my Copic markers.

Whilst they dried, I set about making my background. I’m not going to lie, this took a WHILE.

I rewatched an older Courtney Kreeber video where she talks about the Vanishing Point, to refresh my memory before I got started sketching out my scene.

Whenever you are wanting to draw anything which continues into the distance, you have to make sure that every line goes back to the same spot; this is called the Vanishing Spot.

If you think about a long street with rows of shops either side, and you are standing at one end of the street looking down to the other end. All of the ‘lines’ that go down the street will all appear to be passing through the same spot in the distance; on the horizon.

This is the absolute KEY to getting a scene which looks properly proportioned and pleasing to both the eye & the brain.

I found my Vanishing point by lightly marking out a rectangle in the top left hand corner of an a2 panel of Neenah 80lb; this would be my back wall, and my Vanishing point is the very centre of this ‘wall’.

In order to find the centre, I drew lines that went diagonally from corner to corner, and the point at which they intersect is the exact middle.

I then used this to draw in the base of the other wall, my tables, the top of the door frame and several lines on the floor which will allow me to create cobbles later on.

Once I was happy with my pencil lines, I used one of my Altenew Fine Liners to draw in the final layout; these are alcohol marker safe, so I would have no problem colouring in with my Copics, after adding these pen lines.

I set this aside to dry whilst I coloured in my stamped images.

The colour combinations that I used are:

Skin – E00, E000, E21
Reds – R05, R17, R27, R89
Teal – BG10, BG23, BG49, BG75
Browns – E18, E09, E59, E57, E25, E15
Purples – RV69, V09
Cool Greys – C00, C1, C3, C5, C7
Warm Greys – W0, W1, W3, W5

I repeated these blends throughout all of the prop images to give my finished design a sense of cohesion.

Once I was happy with how all of these images looked, I cut them out using the coordinating dies; putting them straight into a little dish* so that I didn’t lose any of them. (*VERY important step when you are as messy and/or clumsy as I am!)

I used some low tack tape to mask off everything except the two walls, and I used one of my Blending Buddies to add warm grey tones across the whole two walls until I had a nice, even colour all over.

Then I masked along the vertical line which marks the point where both walls meet, so that I could add some darker grey into the corner, then I swapped the mask so that I was then adding that darker ink to the other wall.

This masking might seem like a pointless step, but it ensures that I have a crisp, dark line where the walls meet & the shadows are darkest. This shadow can then blend away naturally as you come out of that corner.

I coloured the floor using Cool Grey markers, so that you really see that difference between the warm toned walls & cool toned floor.

I made sure to use a darker colour at the back of the room than the front, which helps trick the eye into thinking that the back is further away from us.

The tables and wooden door were super easy to colour, and didn’t take long at all.

Once I had my background all coloured in, I spent the next ‘I don’t even know’ how long arranging all of my images onto my little scene.

I made sure my tables were covered in books and strange potions, then I stamped out a quick, simple sentiment straight onto my panel.

I popped up the last few bits & bobs, including the three magical friends and I added a feather floating up after being Charmed by Hermione.
