Papercrafters Unite Against Racism Blog Hop

Hey Crafty People!

The goal of this hop is to come together to stand behind our crafty brothers & sisters of colour in our community. But we also want to show our support in the battle for equality across the world. Justine Hovey has arranged Blog, Instagram & Youtube Hops that are all running today and I am so grateful to her for giving me a place in both the Blog & Instagram. You can check out Justine’s blog post here for more information and I have included another couple of links too more information.

I added Wrought Iron Crackle Mousse onto some deep navy card stock using a stencil from Altenew. I absolutely love the texture this mousse gives once it’s dry, but it does make your paper curl up a LOT! Despite watching Yana Smakula’s video on these I was still convinced that the mousse would just flake off completely when I straightened the paper, but it really doesn’t! You do need something sturdy to straighten the paper though, so I added 3 layers of card behind it which has the added bonus of lifting the panel up to add dimension.

I printed one of the sentiments from Gina K’s free download onto vellum and then I used my laminator to add silver foil to it. I cut the sentiment down into single lines & fussy cut the small leaf branch that goes with it and backed these with some more of the navy card I used for my background.

I added some silver metallic thread from my stash, adhering it with a tiny glue dot, then popping my sentiments up on foam squares which also hold the thread in place. A few silver & black sequins and a 110lb Neenah card base and I was done!

It’s so hard to catch the shine from the silver foiling in a photo, but it looks absolutely gorgeous in real life!

I thought long & hard about what to say in this post, and whilst looking online for ways to educate myself better about racism and white privilege, I came across a post by the artist Banksy that I feel perfectly sums up what I want to say:

At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about this issue.

But why would I do that?

It’s not their problem. It’s mine.

People of Colour are being failed by the system. The white system. Like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of the people living downstairs.

This faulty system is making their life a misery, but it’s not their job to fix it. They can’t – no-one will let them into the apartment upstairs.

This is a white problem. And if white people don’t fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in.
