Scene Building – AECP Level 1 Post 10

Hey Crafty People!

This is the last post before I do my assessment for Level 1 and I must admit I have been putting this one off on purpose; I have never made a scene card, so I was a little bit nervous to tackle this one.

As is the case with most things we worry about it was not nearly as bad as I had anticipated, but I did learn from a few mistakes along the way.

Planning my scene

I chose to use the Way Too Sweet stamp set to create a simple birthday scene.

I decided to create a striped table that my cupcakes would be sitting on, so I used a ruler and pencil to mark the ‘vanishing point’ of my scene. This is the middle point of your view and any lines within your scene will go to this point. This is how you create a realistic vantage of a scene.

This is the first time I have attempted anything like this, so I kept it VERY simple.

Stamping & masking

.Once I had marked out my scene I stamped my cupcakes; when you are wanting to stamped multiple images that sit in front/behind of others you need to stamp all of the images you want to be at the very front first. Once stamped I added a mask, which is just a fussy cut piece of masking paper/post-it that you place over those images you have already stamped. This protects the images you have already stamped and allows you to stamp another image that is partially covered by another.

I just repeated this stamping, then masking each image until I had the number of cakes I wanted.

Creating the scene

After this it was time to use a Copic safe fineliner to add the other lines that create the rest of my scene and stamp my sentiment onto the banner.

I then masked the entire of my scene, leaving only the sky unmasked. I used a blender brush & Distress Oxide to blend small amounts of ink off a cloud edge stencil; moving & turning the stencil as I worked from the top the page to my horizon line. Then I left this, with the mask in situ, for 10-15minutes to allow it to dry.

I wanted to colour my scene with bright & cheery colours that would create a cartoon-esque feel that lends itself to being a card for a child’s birthday.

You always need to remember that as anything gets further away it will become darker, this is very important to give the illusion of depth within the scene.

Once coloured I trimmed my scene down using a rectangular die from Simon Says Stamp and layered it onto yellow cardstock before affirming to a white card base. I will pair it with a yellow envelope that matches the yellow layer on my card.

I had a lot of fun with this card and after taking this Altenew class I’ve got many more ideas to use scene building in my cardmaking which is really exciting!
