No-Line Colouring with Die Cuts – A Copic Coloured Gift Stack!

Hey Crafty People!

Today’s project is a brand new one, never shared before—and it’s a special technique that’s all about slowing down and enjoying the mindful side of cardmaking.
I’m using Copic markers to colour a die-cut image for a no-line colouring effect—where the details of the design are formed entirely through the shading and depth of your colouring, not from stamped or printed outlines. This Copic coloured gift stack took time and patience, but I found the process so therapeutic and creatively rewarding.

Copic Coloured Gift Stack

  1. Die Cut the Design – Start by die cutting the Large Stack of Gifts Fancy Die from Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80lb cardstock. This die adds subtle debossed lines—your only guide for placement and shape.
  2. Choose & Plan Your Colour Palette
Pick 3–4 shades for each colour you plan to use. Ideally:
    a. Light (base)
    b. Medium
    c. Dark
    d. “Scary” dark (deep shadow tone)
  3. Use the lightest tone (a.) to saturate the area fully. Then gently add a touch of the darkest shade (d.) in shadow areas—edges, undersides, or places where one object overlaps another.
  4. Blend out using (c.), then (b.), and finish again with (a.) to smooth the transitions. Repeat this for each panel/side of the stack individually—Don’t be tempted to speed up the process by colouring an entire box in one go, we do it one section at a time to make sure that we get the dimension needed to give it the look of a 3d item and for that, each side needs its own colour & shadow direction & placement.
  5. Trust the Process
Yes, it will look rough at first! That’s part of the magic—just keep building those layers and respecting light direction for believable dimension.
  6. Add Extra Shadow with Greys
Once the main colour is down, layer in subtle greys (C5 for deep shadows, C3 or C1 for lighter areas depending on your base colour).
  7. Step Up the Detail with Pencils
Add depth and richness by layering coloured pencils over your Copics. Keep the tip super sharp to get right into edges, and shade with the side of the pencil for smoother transitions.
  8. Final Touches
Highlight with a white gel pen and add sparkle where you like!

Finishing the Card:

  1. Background: Stamp a snowflake Bold Prints red rubber background in Hero Arts Contour ink on a white panel. Stamp twice for slightly more contrast if you’d like, using a stamp positioner.
  2. Sentiment: Stamp in black ink and trim into strips.
  3. Assembly: Adhere the die-cut gift stack with foam adhesive. Add your sentiment, and embellish with clear or silver gems for that festive finish.

Copic Coloured Gift Stack!

This technique might take time, but it’s incredibly calming. There’s something so special about letting the colouring do all the work—no lines, just light and shadow. ?
