Friends of Dorothy & 30 Makes to Celebrate Pride

Hey Crafty People!

We made it to Day 30 of Pride Month, and I’m ending this colourful journey with a project that’s close to my heart.

This card is a special nod to the iconic “Friends of Dorothy” phrase—a secret symbol of LGBTQ+ solidarity through history—and the subtle, beautiful ways queer identity has been expressed, even when it had to be hidden. And really, what better way to honour that than with a pair of glittery red heels?

I used a really fun technique for this make—colouring with embossing powder using the WOW Embossing Pen—and paired it with a digital stamp here, but you can use whatever image/stamp you want. Add a dash of sparkle, and it becomes a card full of meaning, joy, and history.

And because this is the final day of Pride Month, I’ve also included a round-up gallery of all 30 creations I’ve shared throughout June! You’ll find quick links to each card’s blog post or video tutorial in case you missed any.

Friends of Dorothy

  1. I used digital images for this card—specifically a gorgeous pair of heels I’ve coloured many times before. If you’re unfamiliar with using digital stamps, here’s a helpful post explaining how I create panels with them. But you can also use any shoe-themed stamp you’ve got in your stash.
  2. Colour the interior sections and bow with your preferred medium (I used Copic markers). Don’t forget to build up shadows using darker tones, and add highlights with your lightest markers to make the colouring pop.
  3. Before moving on to embossing, colour the areas you plan to heat emboss using a marker or ink that closely matches your chosen powder. This base colour helps avoid stark white showing through any gaps.
  4. Use the WOW Embossing Pen to “colour” the section you want to emboss. Work in small sections and check your panel under the light—you’ll see a glossy sheen wherever you’ve applied the pen, which helps spot any missed areas.
  5. Sprinkle over your embossing powder—I chose Red Embossing Sparkles to echo Dorothy’s ruby slippers—and heat from underneath to avoid blowing away the glitter.
  6. If needed, repeat the embossing to get full sparkle coverage.
  7. To finish, add flat-back pearls or gems with a strong liquid adhesive for a luxurious touch.
